N E W S

This fall, after 5 years of part time teaching, Matt became a full time Assistant Professor of Musical Theater at Boston Conservatory at Berklee.

This past summer at French Woods Festival, Matt music directed the amateur world premiere production of Something Rotten, and worked with Alan Menken's MD and conductor Michael Kosarin premiering new and revised vocal arrangements for Beauty and the Beast.  Additionally, Matt served as the director for productions of Company, Disaster!, and Curtains.

Last year, Matt made his debut at the Huntington Theatre Company, music directing MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG.  This production is a remount of director Maria Friedman's universally acclaimed production from London.  Mark Umbers and Damian Humbley will reprise their roles as Frank and Charley, and they are joined by Wicked alum Eden Espinosa as Mary Flynn.  Stephen Sondheim has lauded the West End production as "the best he's seen."

Matt recently won IRNE Awards for his work on Merrily We Roll Along at the Huntington Theatre Company and Bridges of Madison County at SpeakEasy Stage Company.

"The superlative seven-piece band led by music director Matthew Stern illuminates all the colors within the 'Fun Home' score."

Boston Globe on FUN HOME (Speakeasy)

"This is, by far, one of the best musically directed shows I have ever seen on the regional level. Stern’s thoughtful work entered every phrase, melody and lyric — it’s stunning. The company’s tight harmonies and cohesive stylistic vocal choices were impeccable. My jaw was on the floor. I would love to work with Stern in the future, because it was a master class in musical direction."

Boston Musical Theatre on MERRILY (Huntington)

"Matthew Stern's musical direction is impeccable. All the elements are there in both cast and orchestra. It is incredibly refreshing to hear a cast deliver clean, unison consonant cut-offs...Vocally, there is not a weak link in this ensemble and they provide some of the best harmonic singing seen recently on a Boston stage."

EDGE Boston on VIOLET (Speakeasy)

"I'm not sure the music has ever been played in jauntier fashion than it is by Matthew Stern's band."
